Tips for Dressing for Success!

What you wear may just set you apart from other during an interview.
Here are some helpful tips you could use for making a great first impression in an interview.

Types of Business Attire

  1. Business Casual - A casual, but professional look usually a button down with khakis and dress shoes.
  2. Business Formal - A more formal look made to impress (for example, a suit and tie with dress shoes).

Tips for Dressing to Impress
  • Dress for the job you want to get.  Depending on the type of job you're applying for, you should dress appropriately.  For example, applying for a retail job is much more casual than applying for a job at Wall Street. If you are applying for retail, go with something more business casual and if applying for a white collar job, you should go for the business formal look.
  • Groom yourself.  First impressions are a major key to getting hired. So whether your job is retail or business, always come in looking good. Some examples of this are: a clean shave, haircut, and trimmed nails.
  • Do not wear any strong cologne or perfume.
  • Wear appropriate colors (for example: navy, grey or black).

Interviewing

Interviewing could be hard unless you know how to do an interview then it would be easy for you.  Here are some sample questions and how to answer them!

Interview Questions:
1. What are your weaknesses?
2. Why should we hire you?
3. Why do you want to work here?
4. What are your goals?
5. Why did you leave (or why are you leaving) your job?

Responses:
1. "I am always working on improving my communication skills to be a more effective presenter. I recently joined Toastmasters, which I find very helpful."
2. "With five years' experience working in the financial industry and my proven record of saving the company money, I could make a big difference in your company. I'm confident I would be a great addition to your team."
3. "I've selected key companies whose mission statements are in line with my values, where I know I could be excited about what the company does, and this company is very high on my list of desirable choices."
4. "My immediate goal is to get a job in a growth-oriented company. My long-term goal will depend on where the company goes. I hope to eventually grow into a position of responsibility."
5. "I managed to survive two rounds of corporate downsizing, but the third round was a 20% reduction in the workforce, which included me."
If you are employed, focus on what you want in your next job: "After two years, I made the decision to look for a company that is team-focused, where I can add my experience."

Dress for the Job You Want

A lot of times we look at our closets and think "What should I wear for work today?" or "Is this appropriate for this interview?" Well what we fail to realize is that what may be accepted in our eyes, is not accepted in the eyes of a professional. Here I will tell what to wear for your job or for future jobs to come.

Men's fashion:

Solid color button down shirts(black, blue brown and gray)
Solid color ties (no Bow ties)
Black, gray or blue pants are accpeted
Black or brown dress shoes
*all clothes must be ironed

Women:

Blouses and button downs shirts
Dresses and skirts minimal knee length
Black, gray or blue pants are accepted
Solid color flats or heels are accepted as well
*all clothes must be ironed

Absolutely no  jeans, sneakers or shorts are allowed to be worn, hair and nails must be work appropriate, and offensive tattoos can not be shown on display.

Both of these are prime examples of what to wear the next time you look at your closet and get a brain freeze on what to wear.

To Wear or Not To Wear?: Tips on dressing for success

So, the first step is over. You finished filling out the application for the job; listing all of your work experience, answering numerous questions about your work ethic on an online questionnaire, and you even polished up your hand dandy resume! After restless nights of worrying, you finally get a call saying they would love to have you come in for an interview: now what?

First, don't panic! Finding an appropriate outfit can be intimidating, but with the help of Google it is possible. Second, the outfit you should wear is based on what type of position you are going for or what your potential company is. If it's a store like Macy's, for example, it would make sense for you to wear all black since that's the kind of uniform the employees wear.  If you're working in an office setting, then you should go either business casual or professional. When in doubt of what to wear, go with business casual!

Here are a few images of what business casual and professional outfits are appropriate for both men and women:

Hopefully this image helps! Good luck in all your future interviews!

Dress for Success

It’s often been stated that clothes make a person. Our choice of clothing carries out a certain message to people around us. For example, if one wears yoga pants to their work place, it’s not only unethical, but it also shows the people around the person that the said person isn’t serious about their job. Now, one can argue that it’s about the comfort level and that it shouldn’t determine how hard a person works, however, unfortunately we live in a society that judges us based on our physical appearance more than anything. No matter how talented or experienced you are, those two things will not always be factored in to get you the job you desire.

There’s more to just being smart at your job. One who is dressed in suit and tie is more likely to be taken seriously when compared to someone dressed in a T-shirt. Our appearance often speaks for us, it tells those around us who we are, and how we are as a person. Furthermore, it tells those around us as to how we view ourselves, the self image we hold. Our appearances not only make an impression on people, but they also contribute to the idea of how confident you are about yourself and what you can bring forth to your work place. If you’re confident, you’re more likely to be successful.
