Career Trends: Are They Important?

In short, the answer is YES! So what exactly is a career trend? A career trend can be defined as a pattern or direction in the job market that shows how people are working, what employers are looking for, and which jobs are growing. Why are career trends important? Understanding career trends is a part of your career exploration and development. This gives you an opportunity to strategize and plan your future career accordingly. Instead of applying for random jobs, this provides information to work with where you can match your skills to in-demand job industries. Students can learn about core competencies and skills employers are looking for. This gives you an opportunity to build on those skills while you’re in school, whether that’s in your classes, through part-time jobs or internships opportunities, or personal projects. KCC students also have access to upskilling opportunities through sites like The Forage, and free access to LinkedIn Learning. Keeping up with career trends...

More Than Just Accounting: Why Big Four Events Matter for Students

A lot of students hear the phrase the  “Big Four” and immediately think, “That’s probably only for accounting majors.” Honestly, I used to think the same thing too. But after seeing more career events and employer presentations on campus, I started realizing these companies are looking for much more than just accounting skills.   The “Big Four” refers to the four largest accounting and professional services firms in the world: Deloitte, PWC, EY, and KPMG. Besides accounting and auditing, these companies are also involved in consulting, technology, finance, marketing, operations, human resources, and many other areas. That’s why events connected to companies like Deloitte can actually be useful for students from different majors and backgrounds.   Our Deloitte event on May 29, 2026 is a good example of that. KCC students from accounting, business, and liberal arts majors took a trip to the Deloitte Headquarters in Rockefeller Plaza for a day of workshops an...

As of the end of 2017, Glassdoor reported a record 6.1 million open jobs in the U.S.   The good news is that labor market is strong and growing, yet there are major changes ahead.   Impact of workforce automation With growth in artificial intelligence (AI) technology, many jobs will be replaced in the next 10 years (Motley Fool, USA Today, Forbes).  From ordering kiosks to chatbots, AI will continue to be a feature in the workplace.   This has the potential to replace positions in retail and customer service. Some of these trends are already visible in the workplace, while others will take some time to be apparent.   Things to keep in mind as a college student If you are still deciding about your career path, consider careers that are not readily replaced by technology.  These include many jobs in healthcare and labor-intensive roles  (Motley Fool), or sciences, human services and other professional s...

Finding Your Place in The Job Market

While spending the first 1-2 years in college, drowning in academic assignments, many students tend to avoid thinking about life after college, (yet, it is approaching). We spend resources and dedicate time to evaluate our own interests, values and skills in pursuit of our career aspirations. However, at times understanding the jobs’ market and the potential future growth in a specific career is just as important when choosing and beginning a career. The job market in 2017 is better than it has been in years. Unemployment rates are slowly dropping and employers are having hard time finding qualified candidates given the shortage in the job seekers market. This reality provides recent college graduates (potential employees) with an advantage. In comparison to previous years there is less competition on every job offered. Like most career development preparation assignments, the market research begins with your own evaluation. Once you evaluated your interests and have a c...
