DEI & The Workplace

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), is a broad term that covers the issues of equality in the United States. It existed throughout the years, trying to advocate for equality amongst individuals regardless of their race, sex, or religion. Thi helps foster respect and equality in every sector of the society, ensuring that as long as a person is a citizen of the United States, they are allowed to receive the same benefits as others.

In the workplace, DEI is very essential as it ensures that people are hired based on the fact that they meet the qualifications of the position they applied for, and not discriminated against by not qualifying them for unknown reasons even if they reach all other qualifications.

Below are a few important reasons for DEI in the workplace:

1. The Workplace Should Reflect Today’s Emerging Workforce: Social change has historically often led to backlash, but that isn’t necessarily a good reason to retreat or pivot away from one’s DEI mandate. Today’s emerging workforce and future leaders are the most diverse generation in history, so it goes without saying that they are going to expect and demand a workplace that reflects who they are and honors their backgrounds, experiences and visions.

2. Every Culture Needs Diversity To Stay Alive: Our workplaces have been created—and the majority of them are run—by white men. Due to that origin, the values of corporate life are archetypically masculine: up or out; win; work many hours. Every culture needs diversity to stay alive. Equity, inclusion, belonging and justice are strategies to make diversity work. I do not believe in programs. I do believe in developing every co-worker’s consciousness!

3. Embracing DEI Helps Meet Employees’ Evolving Needs: The growing multicultural and multigenerational workforce makes DEI an imperative for organizations. By embracing DEI, companies can better understand and meet the evolving needs of their employees. Studies have proven that DEI leads to stronger financial performance and helps businesses attract and retain top talent.

4. Diverse Teams Lead To More Creative, Innovative Solutions: Diverse teams bring together a wide range of opportunities and experiences, leading to more creative and innovative solutions to challenges. Organizations prioritizing DEI will be more attractive, with values aligned with a diverse pool of job seekers. They will also better retain employees who feel valued and included. Understanding diversity should also help you better understand your customers.

5. DEI Fosters Respectful Workplace Environments: DEI is crucial for fostering inclusive workplace environments that respect and value diverse perspectives, leading to innovation and growth. In the future, DEI programs may focus more on systemic changes, enhancing accountability and integrating DEI principles into every organizational layer for more profound impacts.

6. DEI Is A Competitive Advantage: DEI is a competitive advantage that forward-thinking companies cannot ignore, and it is crucial for fostering innovation, attracting diverse talent and boosting organizational performance. DEI programs will likely start focusing more on addressing systemic barriers and fostering a true sense of belonging beyond just representation. Successful organizations will embed DEI into their culture and decision-making.

You finished filling out the application for the job; listing all of your work experience, answering numerous questions about your work ethic on an online questionnaire, and you even polished up your hand dandy resume! After restless nights of worrying, you finally get a call saying they would love to have you come in for an interview: now what? First, don't panic ! Finding an appropriate outfit can be intimidating, but with the help of Google it is possible. Second, the outfit you should wear is based on what type of position you are going for or what your potential company is.
