The new semester is approaching and with that often comes a level of franticness and overwhelm. You may even still be in “break mode” and lack the necessary motivation to get going. However, taking the time to prepare for the semester decreases levels of anxiousness and ensures that you are ready to tackle your classes with confidence.
Here are some tips to help you get started:
1. Remember why you decided to college: Thinking
about your future goals and aspirations can be an exciting motivator to get you
going. Maybe it’s the thought of working at the Fortune 500 company you have
been following for years. Maybe it’s envisioning your dream car or where you
want to own a home. Remembering that your time in college is not just an education,
but also a means to your dream career and lifestyle can help with keeping your eye on the
prize.
2. Check in with your advisor: Did you register for
classes but have some questions? Speak with your academic advisor to make sure
you are on the right track to graduation.
3. Gather your supplies: Whether it’s updating the
software on your laptop, buying notebooks, highlighters, flash drives, or a new
headset, be sure to make a checklist of the essentials needed to get through
your classes.
4. Entering campus: Be sure to have your school issued
ID ready every time you enter the college. Need a new ID? Visit security
services on campus to get a new one printed. Planning to drive to school and
park on campus? Purchase your parking pass as soon as they become available.
5. Read your syllabi: Be sure to thoroughly read
the syllabus for each class ahead of time. It’s important to have an
understanding of what is expected of you to pass your class and be aware of the
topics that you will be learning.
6. Get organized: Once you have your full class
schedule, make a plan on how you will organize your time to study, do homework,
and tackle large projects. Use a calendar (digital or hard copy), to write down
important dates and deadlines for tests, assignments, and projects. Keep your
calendar, or to-do list, handy so that you can check it daily to stay on track.
7. Connect with friends/classmates: Form study
groups, text group/chats, with students in your classes or other friends you
can lean on for support.
8. Identify all of the student support services on
campus: Offices like Student Life can connect you to clubs and activities to
help you get involved with campus life and feel like you’re a part of the
community. Visiting the Career & Transfer Center will help you with your
career development, build your resume, connect you to internship opportunities,
and network with employers. These are essential parts of the college experience
that help in achieving your future goals.
9. Communicating online: Be sure that you know how
to access your student email! This is often a main source of communication in
college. Just as equally important is knowing how to access and use the student
success management system—Navigate. You can use Navigate to schedule
appointments with your academic advisor, see alerts from your support team and
professors, review your success plans, and see your basic student information.
10 When in doubt, remember that there are a multitude of staff and faculty ready and available to answer your questions and assist with your needs. You are not alone, so don’t be afraid to reach out!
Good Luck!
