The Importance of Internships

You probably have heard the word “internship” several times during your time in college, in class, from an advisor or just posted on a flyer in the hallways of the school. But what does “internship” really mean? It is a career related experience that you get to try while you’re still in college, to expose you to the career field that interests you, also offering the chance to acquire professional experience.

There are so many benefits that come with an internship opportunity: besides trying out a career; you will gain important skills as well as the possibility to network and develop professional contacts that will come useful when it will be the time to find employment and for references in future job opportunities.

As if all this is not enough, keep in mind that internships often turn into a full-time employment. The National Association of Colleges and Employers states that 60% of the time paid internships will turn into a job offer at your internship company. This might also help you in getting a job in another company: 66% of employers believe that relevant work experience is a more important factor than your academic performance. Also, 91% of employers think that students should have at least 2 internships before they graduate.

If after reading this and you’re seriously thinking about applying for an internship opportunity, keep in mind that there are some steps you want to follow in order to succeed:

·         First things first: Assess yourself. Understand what your career needs are and what you need to clarify your career goals.

·         Follow up on preparing your Career Portfolio, which will include a cover letter and resume.

·         Start your research: Look for internships on websites, at career fairs and in listings that you can find in our office, C102. The more applications you submit, the higher is the chance for you to be contacted by a hiring manager.

·         Schedule your interview and secure your position! For tips about how to prepare for your interview, check out our blog post titled “Successful Interview Tips” or schedule an appointment for a mock interview. Advisors will give you helpful guidelines that will properly prepare you.
