Quick tips: Dos and Don'ts of writing a resume

Here are some tips to write a resume that will help boost your chance of getting whatever job you go after:

  • Tip #1: BE HONEST! Don't write on your resume that you speak Spanish fluently if the only phrase you know is Buenas Dias. If you lie on the resume, your potential job may find out and it can be grounds for completely dismissing you. Also, if you are willing to lie on your resume, the company might think you won't be an honest employee.
  • Tip #2: Customize your resume to whatever job and position you're going for. If you're applying to Burger King, list any experiences you have working in the food industry or whatever skills you have being as a cashier. If you're applying to an office position, list any experience you have working with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, how many words your can type per minute, etc.
  • Tip #3: DON'T add any personal information! There's no need to add your birth date, social security, height, weight, or the fact you like to take long walks on the beach. It's not necessary, plus leaving out this information will ensure that they don't discriminate against you based on your personal info at a glance.
  • Tip #4: Proofread your resume. Go over your resume to make sure there are no typos. Ask someone else to go over it as well to make sure everything is right.
