SD 11

I decided to take SD 1100 because I have difficulty writing cover letters for internship opportunities. I know that I plan on going for my bachelors and then my masters after graduating from Kingsborough Community College and I know that I will have many interviews and cover letters to write along the way. Since taking this SD 100 course with Professor Natasha Lauriston my career choice has not changed. I came into Kingsborough knowing I want to be an editor and my time in this SD 1100 course has only motivated my career goals. My SD 1100 course has made me confident in my cover letter writing and ability to ace an interview.
In the SD 1100 course I have learned how to keep my resume looking neat, write cover letters, do well on interviews and manage my social media presence. I would have liked to learn more about places to find internships, besides the career services office on campus. I have benefited from this course by learning to make myself more appealing to future employers. My only suggestions for future SD 1100 courses is to have professors as clear as Ms. Lauriston, she made the learning process entertaining, engaging and informative

Interested In Becoming An Editor?

To become an editor you need particle experience. For starters you should be majoring in journalism, writing or an english major to prepare you for the intensive amount of writing you will need to do. Secondly, you should join any publications your college may have, such as a magazine, newsletter or newspaper. Your next goal is to get clips, clips are pieces of your writing. You can either start your own blog, freelance or find an internship to get some experience under your belt.

Here are some relevant and interesting facts about editing that can be found on the Bureau of Labor Statistics website:

Editors plan, coordinate, and revise material for publication in books, newspapers, magazines, or websites. Editors review story ideas and decide what material will appeal most to readers. They also review and edit drafts of books and articles, offer comments to improve the product, and suggest titles and headlines. In smaller organizations, a single editor may perform all of the editorial duties or share them with only a few other people.
The following are examples of types of editors:
Copy editors review copy for errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling and check the copy for readability, style, and agreement with editorial policy. They suggest revisions, such as changing words and rearranging sentences and paragraphs to improve clarity or accuracy. They also may carry out research, confirm sources for writers, and verify facts, dates, and statistics. In addition, they may arrange page layouts of articles, photographs, and advertising.
Publication assistants who work for book-publishing houses may read and evaluate manuscripts submitted by freelance writers, proofread uncorrected proofs, and answer questions about published material. Assistants on small newspapers or in smaller media markets may compile articles available from wire services or the Internet, answer phones, and proofread articles.
Executive editors oversee assistant editors and generally have the final say about what stories are published and how they are covered. Executive editors typically hire writers, reporters, and other employees. They also plan budgets and negotiate contracts with freelance writers, sometimes called “stringers” in the news industry. Although many executive editors work for newspaper publishers, some work for television broadcasters, magazines, or advertising and public relations firms.
Assistant editors have responsibility for a particular subject, such as local news, international news, feature stories, or sports. Most assistant editors work for newspaper publishers, television broadcasters, magazines, book publishers, or advertising and public relations firms.
Managing editors typically work for magazines, newspaper publishers, and television broadcasters, and are responsible for the daily operation of a news department.

Misbehaving Classmates by Marilyn Rosario

Studies found on the website apa.org showed, that children who misbehave in the classroom could be misbehaving because their brain isn’t fully developed and they can not make the connections required to behave. This theme is similar to that of everyone doesn’t grow at the same pace or hit puberty at the same time. To me it does sound crazy to make that connection but researchers found children use the misbehavior to avoid and ignore the lesson the teacher is giving. Some children lack certain characteristics but they do have other good qualities. For example, “a young child with highly advanced verbal skills may develop gross and fine motor control more slowly and have trouble learning to write clearly.

Dreams

According to an article found on Psychcentral.com, researchers found three fascinating facts about dreams. First is “People with disabilities dream as if they don’t have them”. For example, a paralysed person will dream about being a famous dancer. The second fact is that, “younger people report dreaming in color more often than adults”. The researchers believe that color television can be the reason for this. The last fact is that, “dreams are clues to our identity”.  One researcher, named Sumber, said “Dreams represent the opportunity to learn more about ourselves and our path in life. Dreams are typically the unconscious mind attempting to bridge understanding with the conscious mind.”

Anxious Short Children

In an article I found on psychologytoday.com, I learned that children that suffering from social phobias and panic disorders can be traced back to an issue that results from stunt growth, In the article the researchers found that adults suffering from panic disorders, "produced less growth hormone than normal controls when given substances that stimulate hormone release (caffeine is one)." When children experience anxiety they are shorter than average size, and are being treated with a growth hormone, great improvements in their emotional state and physical state are found.  http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/199501/coming-short

What SD 11 Has Done for Me

SD 11 has been a great experience. The course teaches you how to make a proper resume, cover letter, hone your interview skills and really examine possible career choices. I went from strictly wanting to be a physician, to considering being a physician’s assistant, and other possibilities in higher education such as my Master in Public Health, or Nutrition. I also got to experience what it would be like to be interviewed. This is a great course for practically anyone; from those serious about a particular career choice, someone with many different choices in mind, to someone who has no idea what they want to do.

All About Physicians

When I tell people I want to become a doctor, they automatically associate it with prestige and money. Yes, physicians are respected heavily, and make on average $166,400, with a starting salary of about $134,000. But there is a reason behind it. Becoming physician is no joke. It requires that you complete your bachelor’s degree and then go to medical school for four years, and then do 2-5 years of residency-fellowship. This means a minimum of 10 years of schooling after high school. The work load is difficult. To gain acceptance into medical school, you need to have excellent grades (A’s o A-‘s) in practically every course you take in your undergraduate career. On top of that, you must have a lot of extracurricular work and experience outside of school. The biggest disadvantage to becoming a physician are the long hours. A personal life is something you’ll have to put on hold/sacrifice if you choose this career path. This is certainly not a career for everyone, and those who want to still be in the medical field but still maintain somewhat of a life should look into Physician’s assistant, physical therapists, nurses, etc. as alternatives.

-Anika H.

Is Becoming A Physician Right For You?

To explore my career options of becoming a physician, three things I can do, are:

1. Volunteer a a hospital to gain experience in my field.

2. Join a club, which has students with the same career interests as myself.

3. Attend a free medical school seminar o gain knowledge towards my career.

Informational Interview with Professor Wilconsin (Political Science)

With any decision we make in our lives we always look for help, for guidance whether it is personal or professional. No matter how old you get and no matter how  much you think you know everything you don’t.
Making a choice that stays with you for the rest of your life is not an easy one especially when you know that you have an endless number of options. I am at the point where even the smallest bit of advice is like gold.
It’s always good to seek advice from others especially people who share a common interest with you. I interviewed professor Wilconsin and after talking to her I have a whole new view on what it’s like to change your career.
Professor Wilconsin  is a professor here at Kingsborough. She teaches American Politics, Government, Constitutional Law, Political Science and many other subjects. But the best part is that’s not what she originally had in mind when she started. She originally wanted to become a nurse and it was a rising career at that time. She worked in hospitals and clinic as a nurse. She went up to her masters in that field. But eventually as time went by many people came into the field and there was a lot of competition. So she shifted into another field without losing interest in the field she originally worked for. She shifted from being a  student at med student to becoming a law student. She focuses on cases that are related to medical issues.
The best advice she had for me was that to know what you want to do if ever anything happens just be prepared and never lose hope.

Psychology

I chose Psychology because i feel that i meet the skills for what it takes, and the salary and personal benefits are so much in value in this profession
Analytical skills. Analytical skills are important when performing psychological research. Psychologists must be able to examine the information they collect and draw logical conclusions from them.
Communication skills. Psychologists must have strong communications skills because they spend much of their time listening to and speaking with patients.
Observational skills. Psychologists study attitude and behavior. They must be able to watch people and understand the possible meanings of people's facial expressions, body positions, actions, and interactions.
Patience. Because research or treatment of patients may take a long time, psychologists must be able to demonstrate patience. They also must be patient when dealing with people who have mental or behavioral disorders.
People skills. Psychologists study people and help people. They must be able to work well with their clients, patients, and other medical professionals.
Problem-solving skills. Psychologists need problem solving skills to find treatments or solutions for mental and behavioral problems.
Trustworthiness. Patients must be able to trust their psychologists. Psychologists also must keep patients’ problems in confidence, and patients must be able to trust psychologists’ expertise in treating sensitive problems
Psychologists held about 174,000 jobs in 2010. About 34 percent of psychologists were self-employed, 29 percent worked in educational services, and 20 percent worked in healthcare settings.

Career Options??

There are various activities on and off campus this summer the hardest part is choosing one. you can always attempt on interning in the field of your choice. a lot of employers need interns during the summer to get young fresh minds into their business. Volunteer work is always great i was rec emended to the prospect park volunteer group to help clean up the park, this might seem like annoying tedious work that has no relation to a career path but it does. Volunteering shows a lot to future employers and also in this exact field it gives you a chance to be very social and gain new connections for your future real world life. The final way i believe to get involved in your future career is doing your own research and see what you can change or do differently that might become a later skill or attribute you will need.

My Career Aspirations After SD11

Since taking this course my career choice didn’t change probably because that was something I wanted to do from my childhood. My career aspirations aren’t different.
I have learned a lot of things from this course. Some of them are here:
I learned how to make resume and cover letter.
I also learned about a lot of other career choices which can be good for me too.
This class helps me to prepare for any kind of job interviews.

This course helped me a lot and I’m glad that I took this class. Now I can know how to find other jobs and what kind of cover letter will be good for it. I don’t have any suggestions because I think this class teaches everything which a student need to know for his/her future goals.

My Career Aspirations After SD11

Since taking the course my career choice hasn't changed. I still would want to become a lawyer but now i have found other careers in case the lawyer thing doesn't work out. My career aspirations are not different but i did learn a lot during this course like what questions they are not suppose to ask you and how to look professional. i also learned how to give a firm handshake.i think that these things i learned will help in me presenting myself as a future lawyer. i would have liked to learn what jobs are hiring and where to go specifically for an internship. i definitely benefited from this course.i would have never learned about other possible high paying positions that i would qualify for in the future. one suggestion is to have a field trip to a career of your choice to see first hand how your career works.

Computer Support Specialist Interview

Computer Support Specialist Interview

I’ve set up an interview with my big brother who is a computer support specialist for a company called A.S.I. This gave me the opportunity to learn a little more details about the job description. The most important information I have gained out of the interview is to know a computer support specialist’s main task is to oversee the daily performance of computer systems, besides that some other task that are very important are also:

-Set up equipment for employee use.
-Install and perform minor repairs to hardware and software.
      -Provide technical assistance and support.
-Recommend improvements or upgrades to the organization.

How did he get in the field? When he was a kid he was always interested in computers, so from the age 16 he started doing computer courses, from A+ to Networking. My next question was how he got the job he has right now and what were the requirements, the minimum requirement is an A+ certification for entry level job or internship at his corporation. Another question I also asked him what advise can he give to me to pursue this career, he told me it’s very important to get into a technology school and get some certificates especially A+ because even though I will graduate from college, companies still require certificates so try to get as much as possible.

Social Work, Dealing With Trauma and the Elderly

Did you know that social workers provide most of the country’s mental health services? According to government sources, 60% of mental health professionals are clinically trained social workers.

Some social workers deal with traumatizing situations such as post-terrorism. Often,grieving families effected will see a counselor after such events.

Following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, social workers provided mental health care to rescue workers, families, and others in the community. Many Americans were grappling with grief, anxiety, fear, and uncertainty. Social workers, as part of the Red Cross Disaster Relief program, quickly offered assistance and counseling to families and loved ones as well as, to other relief workers overcome with trauma.

Other social workers, especially those working with children, offered counseling and advice to parents and families in reaction to the attacks.

Certain social workers also specialize with aging patients. These patients are in hospices, nursing homes, retirement homes, adult day care centers, and  hospitals. They keep the patients company and provide assistance when needed. This type of social worker, also called Gerontological social workers, make up about 5% of the nation’s half a million social workers. They can help older adults and their families maintain a healthy well-being, overcome problems and achieve maximum potential during later stages of life.  Social workers serve as “advocates” for older people, providing a link between older individuals and the services they need.

Social Work

A social worker works with people who have been socially excluded or who are experiencing or undergoing crisis. Their role is to provide support to enable service users to help themselves. They maintain professional relationships with service users, acting as guides, advocates or critical friends.

Qualified social work professionals are often supported by social work assistants. They also work closely with other health and social care staff.

Many social workers with with young people and their families. They may also work with young offenders, drug abusers, homeless, elderly and people with mental health conditions.

Social workers tasks include conducting interviews with people and their families, offering counseling support to service users and their families. Training, supervision and team meetings, recommending the best decisions for a particular situation or action.

The Interview

I interviewed a family member of mine, who is a marketing intern in U.S Trendy, a fashion website. She's familiar with many of the positions of the company. When asked what a marketing director does, she replied that they oversee a company marketing strategy. Basically they're responsible of coming up with and deciding on a plan that will successfully distribute the product. In order to become a director, one would have to obtain a bachelor’s degree in business or communications. It is also  recommended to consider pursuing a masters because the competition can be very tight. When it comes to experience, it's also important to work in the marketing field for some time, because one doesn't get hired as a director right away. Getting hired as an assistant or an executive will help get the foot in the door. Before becoming a director, it is ideal to get a position as an executive. An executive oversees the company's product and is in charge of analyzing the target market. They do so by considering factors such as gender, age, location. For the most part, they conduct surveys. These surveys can be done over the phone, mail, internet, or in person.

In New York City an executive can have a starting salary as $50,000 and as a director one came make $70,000 or higher.

I  chose  nursing as a career of choice to research, using the" Occupational Outlook Handbook". Nursing based on the outlook handbook is growing faster than the average for all occupations listed in the outlook handbook. In fact, the rate of growth is expected to be 26% between 2010-2020 based on the finding of Occupational Outlook -2012. Nursing is just one of the many interesting and diverse careers listed in the outlook hand book, which is a tremendous resource for career information.

The Occupational Outlook Handbook -2012, provides information on career choices, such as training required, license requirements, salaries, advancement and the future outlook for opportunities. It is a valuable research tool to utilize in seeking information about careers .

In general, nurses provide  numerous duties including health advice, patient care, support to patients, their families and the community. Nurses have the opportunity to work in many locations and fields including schools, nursing homes, clinics, offices, and hospitals. Specific fields include pediatrics, emergency and ambulatory care.

Since taking the SD11 course the summer, I am exploring my career choice options. This course has greatly impacted my decision making process by providing me with insightful information about future careers choices. My career aspirations are different because, I have been exposed to new information such as how to self- assess my interests and abilities, resume/ cover letters, networking and job searches.

The benefits that I have gained include a better knowledge of the career job search process and the preparation necessary to pursue different career options. My role as a student has changed this summer, because I am better prepared to plan and implement the strategies that will lead to my future career choices.

The boards are the place to visit for the up to date information on internships, school opportunities, career workshops/ seminars and job openings and qualifications. I would also be interested  in  setting up an appointment with a career  counselor on campus to gain insight and knowledge about different career options. I can take advantage of the resources  that NYC has to offer by visiting the Business Library located on 34th st and Madison Ave. The Library offers patrons the resources to seek career information on a larger scale!

Exploring My Career Options

3 things I can do off or on campus to explore my career options

1. I think the best way is to go to a career counselor and ask for help. He or She assist with selecting a career that best applies towards your interest. you will be asked to take a interest inventory", which may help you to understand you will be asked to take a majors will be best for you.
2. Another option is to go online and check different college's websites and look for the majors they are offering. This can assist with researching the majors a student is interested in.
3.The third option is to conduct an informational interview so that you may ask specific questions related to your career of choice.

Management Analysts

I researched Management Analysts and I found out that they make around $78,160 dollars per year or around $37.58per hour. In order to receive this job you need a bachelor’s degree and one to five years of experience. There are around 718,800 of these jobs. The occupation outlook handbook states “Management analysts travel frequently to meet with clients. Nearly one-third worked more than 40 hours per week in 2010”. Based on this research, this is one occupation that I would like to pursue.

Exploring Career Options

There are several things I can do on campus to on and off campus to explore my career options. One thing I can do on campus is attend career fairs. At the career fairs I can look at all the available careers in my area of interest and see what the career fair offers.  Another thing I can do on campus is go to the career center and ask a career counselor for their advice and what career options I have. One thing I can do off campus to explore my career options is visit several job agencies and see what is available there. I believe that the job agencies are the best option because it will provide me with a broader range of careers in my field of interest. Also, I may provide me with a list of places that are hiring in my field of study.

Seeing How Multiple Sclerosis Affects Cognitive Impairment

Attached is a study led by Professor Richard Reilly. Professor Reilly is an expert in neural engineering. The study he conducted consisted of 95 subjects; half suffered from Multiple Sclerosis, the other half didn't. Research showed what tests on neuropsychologists would do on Multiple Sclerosis patients. It didn't show how Multiple Sclerosis affected the cognitive impairment of an individual. Professor Reilly and his associates used EEG (electroencephalography). Which is an assessment that developed new mathematical methods to extract information from Multiple Sclerosis patients' scalp. The data will allow them to see not only the cognitive impairment but also the cognitive functioning.

Marriage and Family Counseling

A masters degree (2 to 3 years) is necessary to become a marriage and/or family therapist. In addition, Doctoral program's (3 to 5 years) or post graduate clinical training program's (roughly 3 years), is strongly encouraged if one wants to teach or conduct research.

Marriage and Family therapists are mental health professionals trained in psychotherapy and family systems. They mainly evaluate and treat mental disorders within the context of marriage, couples, and family systems.

These two specific therapy programs are usually solution focused, brief in length of treatment, and are designed with "the end in mind". The programs stray from the initial problem at hand and can focus on back stories, depression, family past, illnesses, problems in household, and/or drug abuse.

Clients are usually hesitant to attend these therapy programs, and most are reluctantly forced to join. However, studies show that clients are highly satisfied with the success of the marriage and family therapy program. After receiving the treatment, around 90 percent of the clients report an improvement in their own emotional health. This is something they can refer to friends as well.
