TIPS FOR ONLINE INTERVIEWS

When it comes to the process of securing a job, the interview is arguably the most important part.  However, in-person interviews may not always be feasible; especially when the company or organization to which you have applied is located in another state or possibly another country.  Fortunately, advances in technology have made it possible for some employers to interview qualified candidates, regardless of their location, utilizing selected virtual platforms such as Skype, Google Hangout or FaceTime.  At some point in your job search, you may be invited to participate in a virtual interview.  Below are some important tips to remember that will assist you in achieving a successful interview.

1.        Identify a Location.  The optimal environment for a virtual interview is one that is quiet and relatively neutral.  Avoid spaces with harsh or dim lighting, or ones that are visually over stimulating.

2.        Select and Test Hardware.  Prior to the interview, determine what device you will be using (i.e., computer, tablet) and perform various tests to ensure its appropriateness for the interview. Specifically, assess your internet connection as well as the sound and camera on your device.  Always have a plan B in the event that your technology goes awry on the day of the interview.

3.        Complete Normal Interview Prep. For any interview, regardless of whether it is in-person or online, it is important to be prepared. This means, gathering information about the company, anticipating and formulating responses to common interview questions, and selecting your outfit.  Additionally, if you have the opportunity, practice your interviewing skills with a friend, family member or colleague. 4.        Dress for Success.  Although you may be in the privacy of your own home for the interview, wearing the appropriate apparel is a must.  (For more information on how to dress for a job interview at http://jobsearch.about.com/od/interviewsnetworking/tp/interviewattire.htm)

5.        Eliminate Distractions.  Remember to silence your cell phone, shut down all apps, and/or close any irrelevant windows open on your computer.

6.        Manage Your Virtual Presentation. Proper interview etiquette still applies here; however body language, speech, and eye contact become even more important in a virtual interview.  Maintain an erect posture, speak clearly, and look into the web camera to provide the illusion of eye contact.

7.        Take Your Time, Don’t Rush.  Interviewing can be anxiety provoking, slow down, breathe, and take time to formulate a thoughtful response to each interview question.  Don’t be afraid to ask the interviewer to repeat a question if necessary.

8.        Be Confident, BE YOURSELF.  You know you and your experiences better than anyone.  As will any other interview, this is your opportunity to convince the employer that you are the best.

9.        Follow Up.  Remember to send a Thank You email within 48 hours of the interview to show your appreciation for the interviewer’s consideration of you as a candidate.  Make sure to also follow up periodically to express your continued interest in the position.

I have also handled thousands of DUIs (Driving under the Influence) and a handful of sex crimes over the years. The Benefits of Having Your Visions/Goals Outlined

We all remember creating some sort of vision board as a project for a class in either elementary school or middle school, and at that time, we either saw it as something fun and exciting to do, or just another stressful homework/project. As we get older, things similar to a vision board/creating outlines for things we want to accomplish become essential for our everyday lifestyle, and our long term goals. Today, we’ll be looking at some of the benefits of having a plan/schedule or outline for everyday life, as well as long term goals. 1. When you have a schedule/a to-do list, you efficiently assign a sufficient amount of time required to complete certain tasks, rather than leave most things undone because of distractions or not having a particular guideline to follow. This is most prominent amongst youths as we often get side tracked by social media, or other entertainment factors that hinder us from completing our daily tasks. 2. Motivation: When you wake up everyday, look at the...

Benefits of Having a Mentor
